False affordance appears when the UI suggests an action that doesn’t work. It signals:

Example 1: An antique dealer

False affordance:

An antique dealer’s online catalogue uses large product photographs that appear clickable, but only the small item titles underneath actually open the product details. Some photographs open a gallery, others do nothing, and sold items use the same visual treatment as available pieces.

A visitor interested in a particular cabinet repeatedly clicks the image expecting to inspect it, but nothing happens. After several attempts, the interface has taught the visitor that its visual cues cannot be trusted.

The problem isn’t excessive clicking. The interface has created an expectation of interaction and then violated it.

True affordance:

The same catalogue makes every product image and title consistently clickable. A subtle interaction state appears when the visitor hovers or taps, sold pieces are clearly marked, and opening an item produces immediate feedback rather than leaving the visitor wondering whether the interaction registered.

The catalogue still contains the same products and information, but its visual signals now correspond to what actually happens when the visitor interacts with them.

The visitor no longer has to test the interface to understand its rules.

When an interface teaches users that its cues are unreliable, repeated clicking is a predictable response—not user impatience.


Example 2: A watch repair shop

False affordance:

A watch repair shop’s booking page displays several service options as large card-shaped panels. They look like selectable choices, but only a small text link inside each card actually works. On mobile, some cards respond to taps while others require the user to tap the text.

A customer trying to select Battery Replacement taps the card repeatedly because the entire component looks interactive, but nothing visibly happens.

The design creates a clickable expectation without providing a corresponding interaction.

True affordance:

The same service cards are made consistently interactive: tapping anywhere on the card selects the service, the selected state appears immediately, and the next step becomes available without requiring the customer to discover a hidden text link.

Every visual cue now corresponds to an actual interaction, and every interaction produces immediate confirmation.

The customer doesn’t need to experiment with different parts of the interface to work out how the booking system operates.

Good affordance removes the question “Did that work?” from the interaction.


Example 3: A print shop

False affordance:

A print shop’s online ordering tool shows paper sizes, finishes, quantities, and turnaround options as visually similar rows. Some rows are selectable, some are informational, and some become active only after another option has been chosen.

A customer repeatedly clicks an apparently selectable finish, but receives no feedback because that option is unavailable for the selected paper type. The interface gives no clear indication of why nothing happened.

The customer is responding rationally to an interface that looks interactive but doesn’t explain its rules.

True affordance:

The same ordering tool clearly distinguishes selectable options from informational text. Unavailable finishes are visibly disabled, dependent options become active when their prerequisite is selected, and every selection produces immediate visual confirmation.

The customer can see what can be selected, what cannot, and what changed after each interaction.

The ordering logic has not become simpler. The interface now communicates that logic instead of forcing the customer to discover it through failed clicks.

Reliable interfaces make their rules visible before users have to test them.


Example 4: A surf school

False affordance:

A surf school’s timetable displays each lesson as a large coloured block. Visitors assume the entire block is clickable, but only the small “Details” text opens the lesson page. Some fully booked sessions look identical to available ones, and tapping a booked session produces no feedback.

A visitor interested in a Saturday lesson repeatedly taps the session block, sees nothing happen, and tries again because the interface strongly suggests that the block itself is interactive.

The frustration comes from conflicting signals: the visual design says “tap me,” while the interaction logic says otherwise.

True affordance:

The same timetable makes the entire lesson block interactive. Available sessions have a clear selectable state, fully booked sessions are visibly unavailable, and selecting a lesson immediately confirms the choice before moving to the next step.

The visitor can understand the interaction from the interface itself rather than learning it through unsuccessful attempts.

The timetable still presents the same lessons and availability. What changes is the consistency between appearance, behavior, and feedback.

When something looks clickable, making it reliably clickable is part of the information design.


Example 5: A freight forwarding company

False affordance:

A freight forwarding company’s shipment-tracking portal displays a row of shipment numbers with underlined-looking text and arrow icons. Some shipment rows open detailed tracking information, while others are static because the shipment has not yet been entered into the tracking system.

Customers click repeatedly on inactive shipment references because the interface provides no indication that those entries cannot currently be opened.

The repeated clicking isn’t caused by impatient users. The interface has presented the same visual cue for two fundamentally different states.

True affordance:

The same portal clearly distinguishes active shipments from entries that are not yet trackable. Active rows have an obvious interactive treatment and respond immediately when selected; inactive entries are visibly unavailable and explain their current status.

The user can tell what can be opened, what cannot, and what will happen before interacting.

The tracking system hasn’t changed. The interface now accurately communicates its capabilities and limitations.

True affordance aligns appearance, behavior, and feedback so users don’t have to fight the interface to understand it.
